August brings us closer to the end of summer, so make the most of the warm weather and long days by getting outside, planning a weekend away, or exploring your city (with the Canoo app)!
For about half of Canoo members, August also marks the back-to-school season. Get your kids back to school ready with a trip to a children’s museum or science centre: check out the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto (which has an astronaut exhibit on now) or TELUS Spark (which has the largest outdoor playground in Calgary).
Find more suggestions of summer events and activities for adults and kids alike below, and let us know what you’re up to this month by sharing your experiences with us on social media using the hashtag #CanooApp.

Meet Canoo member Viri Sanchez. Viri came to Canada from Mexico with the help of a friend from Calgary, Alberta. “Ever since I came to Canada for the first time I knew I wanted to stay. As time went by, that feeling grew stronger and it became my purpose to find a way,” says Viri, “Sometimes life has challenges and mine had no exceptions, when I finally found my way and became a permanent resident I thought that was it. Later, I discovered I could have the privilege to become a citizen: when it happened, it was like finding that secure place that no matter what I will always have.” Read more in this month’s Spotlight.

Did you know there is a federal election this October?
The Canadian federal election is scheduled to take place by the fall of 2019. This will be the first opportunity for you, as a new citizen, to vote in a Canadian federal election! When you vote in the federal election, you vote for a local representative called a Member of Parliament (MP). The leader of the political party with the most elected MPs becomes the Prime Minister of Canada. This October, you get a say in who will be making the laws and policies that impact your family and your community. You get a say in the direction of this country. To learn more about the Canadian federal system, check out the first step of the Elector’s Guidebook to Registering and Voting.
Thank you for helping to #CelebrateCitizenship!

We’re pleased to see many Canoo members lending their support for this initiative. Haven’t signed up for the challenge yet?
